Runtown Biography; Who is Runtown ?
Born on the 19th August 1989 in Enugu state, Nigeria, Runtown is a very popular Nigerian singer and songwriter. Real names Douglas Jack Agu, Runtown was born in Enugu and finished his secondary education there but moved to Abuja after the death of his father before finally settling in Lagos. He actually at a point in his life wanted to be a professional basketballer but had to give that up when his mother got into state politics.
Runtown Biography; Family, Early Life and Career
Runtown though born in enugu, spent most of the time growing up in Abuja with his mother after the demise of his father where she worked in the ministry of Health. He later moved back to Enugu in 2002 when his mother decided to pursue state politics.
Runtown at his early age attended a seminary school but ran away every time he was called to sing or join the choir in their rehearsal. Growing up, Runtown was a serious straight A student, that is why a lot of his friends were surprised when he suddenly developed a burning interest in music.
Right from his secondary school days in Enugu state Runtown has always had a deep affection for music and one day decided to go for an audition. It was at the augition he met Phyno who took him to his studio to work on the beat of Runtown’s song. Runtown had given Phyno a chris brown instrumental to adjust. He was totally amazed at the work Phyno did on the beat and instrumental stating that he was almost as good as an American producer. This was the beginning of many collaborations between Runtown and Phyno who was just a producer as at then. They decided too be unique, adding their indigenous language “igbo” to their songs.
The record label Penthauz which is a national success toady, was actually founded by both Runtown and Phyno through which Runtown released two singles “Party Like It’s 1980” and “Activity “.
They later moved to Lagos to continue their hustle and began living with J. martins, learning from from him also as J. martins was a hot cake in the Nigerian music as at then. He also featured in some songs owned by J. martins. Through J. martins he began meeting other artists including Timaya who too was enjoying success in the Nigeria music industry.
A Few years later, Runtown left Penthauz Record label and signed a very gallant multi-million Naira contract with Eric-Manny Entertainment owned by Nigerian Billionaire Prince Okwudili Uenyiora, C.E.O of popular Dilly Motors.
Runtown Biography; The beginning- gaining national attention and fans
On 29th January 2014, Runtown collaborated with Davido to release a song produced by T-Spize titled “Gallardo” which enjoyed major radio airplay and commercial success and subsequently won the Best Collaboration of The Year award at the 2014 Nigeria Entertainment Awards.
Also On the 23rd of November 2015, Runtown again released his debut studio album titled Ghetto University. Ghetto University featured appearances from DJ Khaled, Phyno, Wizkid, Uhuru and Anatii. The album made him listed in the “Top 5 Most Streamed Artist” in Nigeria, generating over N35 million turn over on MTN Music Plus
Today he is rated one of Nigeria’s bankable artistes. So far, he has been nominated 3 times and won one award Nigerian Entertainment Awards (NEA) with his hit song titled Gallardo.

In the year 2016, towards the end Runtown released a monster hit titled Mad Over You that changed his career forever. After the release of mad over you, Runtown blew up globally. The song was so good that it broke into america’s billboard debuting at number 38 on the Billboard Twitter Top Tracks chart, marking the Runtown’s first ever appearance on the US-based chart. Joey Akan from Pulse Nigeria described the song as a “self-produced track that draws inspiration from the Ghanaian Alkayida sound”. Runtown told The Fader magazine that the song was inspired by African beauty.
While his song with Davido, gallardo brought him national recognition, the release of Mad Over You,sky-rocketed his international appeal. Runtown featured Dj khaled In a dope track titled money bag.
Runtown is currently studying Fashion Management at a fashion school in New York City.

- Ownership of song “Aye”
On 31 May 2016, Runtown fought to terminate his contract with Eric Manny Entertainment upon an injunction obtained by the record label from a Federal High Court in Lagos which stopped Runtown from performing at events or recording songs on allegations that “he signs up, concludes and attends musical shows without the knowledge of the label”. Runtown however denied the allegations in an exclusive interview with Joey Akan of Pulse Nigeria. In the above mentioned interview, Runtown revealed that he quit the record label due to breaches in the recording contract, threat to life and extortion.
This new development is coming just few days after the general manager of Eric Many, Johnson Adumike called out the singer for posting a video on Instastories about a collaboration he’s cooking with Wizkid.
Johnson advised the singer to rather get lawyers to help settle the case he’s having with them rather than flaunting what he doesn’t have the legal right to see through.

He won Nigerian Entertainment Awards Best Collaboration of The Year Won in 2014. He was nominated that same year for The Headies 2014 Next Rated Act but did not win.
In 2015, Runtown was nominated at the Nigerian Entertainment Awards and City People Awards for Best Pop Artiste and Artiste Of The Year.

His debut single was released in 2007 as an upcoming artist He shot to limelight in 2014 upon the release of “Gallardo”, a song which features vocals from Davido and was released as the first single off his debut studio album Ghetto University. Gallardo went on to win “Best Collaboration of the Year” at the 2014 edition of the Nigeria Entertainment Awards.
