Obafemi Martins grew up in Lagos State with his brothers Oladipopu and John, they too played professional football. Oladipopu, who is the oldest among the children played for Reggiana, Partizan and insstruck but had to cut his career short and retire from football in 2009 due to heart problems. He died later on the 8th of August 2011 with the cause of death a suspected heart attack.

Obafemi left Nigeria for Italy at the early age of 16, joining Regianna on his arrival in 2001. He eventually began his senior career in the year 2002 at Italian Serie A club Inter Milan with a mouth-watering transfer fee cost of €750,000 (a very huge amount as at 2002), were he settled quickly into the u-18 side, scoring a total of 23 goals, helping them to the u-18 title of that year. After leaving Newcastle, Martins joined Wolfsburg, then had short spells at Rubin Kazan, Birmingham city(loan), Levante then MLS club Seattle Sounders FC on the 15th March 2013.

On the 24th of October 2014, Obafemi Martins signed a new three-year contract extension with Seattle, almost doubling his annual salary to more than $3 million. Obafemi Martins finished with 17 goals during the regular season creating a club record, as well as also producing 13 assists, a joint-club record held with Mauro Rosales.
